How to Use a French Press- Hot Coffee, Cold Brew, and a Latte Hack

I get many questions about how to use a French press. So today I will write about it in detail. A French press is one of the best tools for coffee at home. It is simple, cheap, and easy to use. You can make hot coffee, cold brew, and even a latte-like drink with it. I started my coffee journey with a French press. Many people do. It is a great way to learn and enjoy coffee without much cost.

In this guide, I will explain three main ways to use the French press:

  1. Hot coffee
  2. Cold brew
  3. A latte-style drink (or cafe au lait)

I will also explain step by step so you can follow easily.

What is a French Press?

If you have never seen a French press, let me explain. It has a few simple parts:

  • The plunger: This is the part you push down. It has a metal mesh filter. This separates the coffee grounds from the water.
  • The glass carafe: This is the container where you put coffee and water. Many French presses have a glass inside with a steel outer layer so you do not touch hot glass.
  • The scoop: Some French presses come with a scoop to measure coffee.
  • The lid: The plunger and the lid fit together to cover the carafe.

You can pull these parts apart for cleaning. Then you put them back together. It is easy and simple.

Hot Coffee with a French Press

The first and most common way to use a French press is for hot coffee. Let me show you step by step.

Step 1: Prepare Coffee Grounds

For hot coffee, you need coarsely ground coffee. If the grind is too fine, the coffee will taste muddy. I like to use fresh ground beans. For measurement, I will give you a simple one. If you have an 8-cup French press, use about 12 tablespoons of coffee. This is around 3/4 cup of coffee grounds.

If you have a scale, you can measure by weight. If not, spoons work fine. You can change the amount based on taste. More coffee makes it stronger. Less coffee makes it lighter. There is no wrong way.

Step 2: Add Water

Boil water and let it cool for 30 seconds. You do not want water that is too hot, or it will burn the coffee. Slowly pour a little water into the French press to cover the grounds. Then stir with a spoon. This makes sure all grounds are wet. After that, pour in the rest of the water until the French press is full.

Step 3: Place the Lid

Put the plunger and lid on top. But do not press down yet. Leave the plunger up. It may look strange, but that is how it works.

Step 4: Wait 4 Minutes

Now wait. The coffee needs time to brew. I set a timer for 4 minutes. You can try 4, 4.5, or even 5 minutes. Longer brewing makes it stronger. During this time, you can get your milk, sugar, or creamer ready. I sometimes add chocolate too.

Step 5: Plunge Slowly

After 4 minutes, press the plunger down. Do it slowly. If you press too hard, the grounds may go into your coffee. You want them at the bottom, not in your cup. Once the plunger is all the way down, your coffee is ready.

Step 6: Pour and Enjoy

Now pour your coffee into mugs. An 8-cup press makes about six cups of coffee. Add milk, sugar, or chocolate if you like. That’s it. Simple and tasty hot coffee.

Step 5: Plunge and Serve

Cold Brew in a French Press

Now let’s move to cold brew. Many people ask me if you can make cold brew in a French press. The answer is yes, of course. It works great.

Step 1: Add Coffee

Use a ratio of 1 part coffee to 7 parts water. For example, add about 1 cup of ground coffee. Again, coarse ground is best.

Step 2: Add Water

Pour filtered or distilled water over the grounds. Do not use tap water if it tastes bad. The water quality changes the taste of your coffee. If the water has chemicals or minerals, it will affect the flavor.

Step 3: Place the Lid

Put the lid and plunger on top, but do not press. Leave the plunger up, just like before.

Step 4: Let it Sit

Put the French press in the fridge. Let it brew for 18 to 24 hours. I like 20 hours. Some people do less, some do more. You can test and see what you like.

After 20 hours, take out the French press. Now press the plunger down slowly. That is it. You have cold brew coffee.

Step 6: Pour Over Ice

Cold brew is strong, smooth, and sweet. Pour it over ice for a cool drink. Add milk or sugar if you want. I can drink cold brew any time—summer, winter, day, or night. It is always good.

Latte Hack with a French Press

Now let’s talk about something fun. You can make a latte-style drink with a French press. It is not a real latte because you need an espresso machine for that. But this trick is close. It makes a nice cafe au lait at home.

Step 1: Brew Hot Coffee

First, brew a normal hot coffee in your French press. Use the steps from above. This will be the base for your drink.

Step 2: Heat Milk

Pour about 1 cup of milk into a mug. Whole milk works best. Put the milk in the microwave for about 1.5 minutes. That makes it hot.

Step 3: Froth the Milk

Now pour the hot milk into a clean French press. Put the plunger in. Then push the plunger up and down many times. Do it fast. This pulls air into the milk. The milk becomes foamy and fluffy. This is the same effect as a steam wand in a cafe.

Step 4: Pour into Coffee

Pour the foamy milk into your coffee. That is it. You now have a cafe au lait. The milk foam sits on top like a latte.

Step 5: Add Flavor

If you want, add syrup, sugar, or chocolate. You can even try to make latte art if you have a pitcher. Sometimes you get a heart or flower shape. Sometimes not. But it is fun to try.

Why I Love the French Press

The French press is one of the most useful tools for coffee lovers. It is cheap. It is simple. It is easy to clean. You can make many types of drinks with it.

  • Hot coffee for the morning.
  • Cold brew for hot days.
  • A latte-style drink when you want something special.

You do not need many tools. You do not need an espresso machine. With one French press, you can do a lot.

Final Thoughts

So that is how to use a French press. We looked at three ways: hot coffee, cold brew, and a latte hack. Each way is easy. Each way is fun. Coffee is about taste and joy. Do not worry too much about rules. Try, play, and find what you like.

If you try these methods, let me know what you think. What recipe do you use? Do you like it strong? Do you like it sweet? Share your thoughts.

And of course, stay happy and stay caffeinated.
